More Information on Pontoon Maintenance & Repairs

  • Are pontoons high maintenance?

Like any investment, a pontoon requires regular maintenance to ensure it provides the intended longevity; however, it is not classed as high maintenance. Unlike a boat or car, there are no mechanical elements that can break or require regular maintenance. However, pontoons will deteriorate if not maintained correctly.

In most cases, particularly with cable pontoons and strut pontoons, it is recommended that a visual inspection be performed every six months to check for signs of corrosion or wear to the aluminium. If corrosion or wear is apparent, it should be swiftly repaired by professionals.

Piled pontoons can present a greater need for maintenance due to the piles. It is common for barnacle buildup to occur on the piles, preventing the rollers in the pile bracket that connect the dock to the piles from functioning correctly. Thus, piles need to be regularly checked for barnacles, and if present, the barnacles should be removed immediately.

Other notable maintenance requirements for pile brackets will be pile roller replacements, which wear over time with constant use. Replacement rollers are affordable and far less costly than repairs to the actual pile bracket if left to wear to that extent.

  • Why is it important to maintain a pontoon?

There are many reasons to maintain a pontoon, the most prominent being to ensure your pontoon’s maximum lifespan. If you purchase a pontoon with a ‘set and forget mentality, you could see significant damage in a matter of years.

For example, a pontoon with corrosion or wear can easily lead to more significant damage if not repaired. A problem that may have cost a couple of hundred dollars to fix could result in thousands of dollars worth of damage.

The same can be said about barnacle buildup. Failure to remove barnacles from pontoon piles can result in minor to significant damage. The pile bracket may break, and at the other end of the scale, it can cause the entire dock to buckle with the adjusting tide.

Simple pontoon maintenance performed at first sight of a problem will prevent the problem from becoming more significant and more costly to repair.

  • How do I keep my pontoon looking new?

A pontoon is fully exposed to the elements at all times. It is subject to UV-exposure, rain, and wear and tear from the ocean conditions and saltwater. While nothing can be done to protect a pontoon from such elements, there are ways to keep a pontoon looking as good as new – or at least, looking as close to new as possible.

A clear sign of a pontoon ageing is wear to the marine carpet. Hosing down the marine carpet after use will help prolong the lifespan of the marine carpet; however, after 10-15 years, you are likely to require replacement carpet.
